a few ideas from liz:
"packing up a backpack"
print out a clipart backpack (the one i liked is found here). you can either color it beforehand or have your child color it in therapy. glue it to a paper bag. tie two pieces of string to the paper bag to make shoulder straps. you've now made your own little backpack! have objects or pictures of objects you would put in a backpack to go camping (example: clothes, sleeping bag, pillow, flashlight, water bottle, bug spray, etc.)
"flashlight scavenger hunt"
scatter vocab words in a dark or dimly lit room. give the child a flashlight. give them clues based on the loudness of your voice (talk quietly when they are far away and get louder as they get closer).
"going fishing"
you'll need a fishing pole, colored fish, and a barrier wall/board. have the child "cast" the line over the board and you attach a fish to it. have them "reel it in". have the child use an adj+noun to describe the fish. you could work on size, color, shape, and number with this activity.
there are a few ideas to get some creative juices flowing... this week should be fun!

ReplyDeleteHere's another idea for fishing that incorporates other vocabulary from this week (swimming, fishing, fish, boat, catch, fire, cook). Today K and I focused on things we do in/with the water when camping. I brought a big tubberware with water and we picked objects out of a bag. We had little people (boy & girl) that went swimming. We each took turns targeting the word by choosing who we wanted to swim... the boy or the girl. We worked on " ____ is swimming" while they swam in the water. We did the same idea for the boat and the fish. The fish were last so next we went fishing and worked on "catch" and "fish". After we caught them we made a pretend fire and using the pot in the sound beginnings room we worked on "cook". Some good vocab we used were "hot", "wait" and "eat" (which was last weeks vocab). For each thing we did we showed the picture that matched what we were doing (the ones that Heather sent out that they're working on in the classroom). To put everything away I put four pictures out w/ the accompanying object we used and gave Katrina the auditory cue alone. She picked what she heard and put it away in the bag.
ReplyDeleteI was surprised at how much K got into this. I've done fishing before with the kids but never pretended to cook them before on a fire and eat them. She loved that part! I've always been a little afraid to "play pretend" with the kids before (like make a fire that really wasn't there) but watching Cami in the P1 classroom has really shown me how well these kids do with pretend and imaginary objects. In fact, K pulled out imaginary worms, knife (to cut her fishes head off), matches and a fire extinguisher (to put the fire out that accidentally got on my shirt when I picked up the fire card)! It was really fun. Alright, girls, lets hear your ideas... I keep a journal of awesome therapy ideas I see and I know you're all doing fun stuff. So spill! =)
AWESOME blog! I hope you'll add it to the aggregator at Deaf Village (www.deafvillage.com) so other parents ad professionals can benefit from all of your wonderful tips.
